Album Review: Positions by Ariana Grande (+ rankings)

Well it is here, the new and highly anticipated Positions album released by Ariana Grande.

Now I love me some Ariana, and honestly looking at it more and more, I am definitely a big fan. I do not think there is a song she has that I do not know by heart, which usually shows true fan status.

I was nervous at first for Positions. Honestly, Thank U, Next the album helped me get through some things in my life, and I will forever be grateful for that album. I have seen many of my favorite albums be followed up by some of my least enjoyed albums. For example, Beyoncé’s Lemonade was incredible, but her follow up album The Lion King: The Gift fell flat for me. As did J. Cole’s album 4 Your Eyez Only that came after one of my favorites of all time, 2014 Forest Hills Drive. It has happened before, and I was terrified it would happen with this album.

Thankfully, we did not have that issue this time around.

Positions is a beautiful album filled with heart, soul, and rawness. I certain type of raw emotion we have never seen from her. At times, it is nasty (in a good way of course); at other times, it tugs at your heartstrings, with many fun and strong melodies mixed in.

Today, we are going to go track by track and dive deep into this album, and I’ll even post a full track ranking at the end. Let us get into the review.

Track 1: shut up

Okay, so first track we start off in an interesting way…

She starts off with a song addressing people who just spend way too much time worrying about her and what she’s doing. She even addresses her past issues like the bombing in Europe, Mac Miller’s death, and her former engagement by saying a few simple words:

All them demons helped me see shit differently
So don’t be sad for me

If I had to be honest, this is one of the least powerful intro’s to one of her albums. I would say it’s the weakest. I am not a fan of the chorus, I think the lyrics are a little half assed, but I do love the orchestra in the background.

Track 2: 34+35

This is definitely what I meant by nasty earlier, and I mean NASTY. And I love it. I love that this is the direction her music is going in. She is an adult woman, and I think she has always wanted to make this kind of music, but been hesitant too.

I think the chorus is the best part of this song hands down.

Can you stay up all night?
Fuck me ’til the daylight
Thirty-four, thirty-five (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)

I mean it’s nasty, but it’s lovely and sounds amazing.

Track 3: Motive (Feat. Doja Cat)

Unpopular Opinion, but not a fan of this one like everyone else seems to be! (Spoiler Alert: I really don’t like any of the featured tracks). I think Doja Cat ruins the song. If it was just Ariana for this one, it would be a big difference in my ranking.

Track 4: just like magic

LOVE this track! I think it is so fun, so positive and gives me all of those confident vibes. Two amazing lyrics in this song:

Take my pen and write some love letters to Heaven

And of course…

Just like magic (Baby), just like magic (Oh yeah)
Middle finger to my thumb and then I snap it
Just like magic (Yeah), I’m attractive (Oh yeah)
I get everything I want ’cause I attract it (Oh)

The chorus is perfect and amazing and ugh. Just YES!

Track 5: off the table (Feat. The Weeknd)

Not feeling this one. Definitely not a fan, and I get people wanted another The Weeknd collab but I’m just not… not feeling it.

Track 6: six thirty

Beautiful. Gorgeous. Real and raw again.  It is so catchy, but I really love it. The chorus is a little off, I feel like it could have been stronger, but the lyrics are amazing. Her voice is cute and light, but still packs that strong powerful tone she normally has.

Track 7: safety net (Feat. Ty Dolla $ign)

This song is definitely growing on me, and probably the best song with a feature on it if I have to be totally honest. I do like Ty Dolla $ign, but I think the song falls a little flat.

Track 8: My Hair

I think the worst song on this album is this song. And it’s sad because I get it, people love it. I get the song, its fun and flirty.. but I am not a fan.

Track 9: nasty

Wooooooof! This SONG! Guys, this is as nasty as it gets but things song slaps so hard!! She went so hard on this song, and she knew what she was doing when she released a snippet of this on her Instagram a few weeks back. I love the chorus so much, and that WHISTLE IN THE BEGINNING. It’s a different sound she’s never touched before, and I am LOVING it.

Don’t wanna wait on it
Tonight, I wanna get nasty (Yeah, yeah)
What you waitin’ for? (What you waitin’ for?)
What you waitin’ for?

Track 10: west side

So this album is very weird with the fact that the first half is actually pretty slow, and the second half is full of bops. Starting at nasty and going all the way down it is just bop after bop! West Side is no different. A lot of people on tik tok have been ranking this kind of low, but I really love listening to this song. It gets me in my feelings, makes me feel confident, sexy.. everything a song like this is supposed to sound like. This song is underrated.

I’m gonna make you want more (More)
I’m gonna be your new favorite
Tell ’em you closing the door

I am the only for sure

Track 11: love language

This song has definitely grown on me since it was released. It’s very funky, which is a very new sound for her. It is not her normal sound, and im definitely starting to feel it more and more. Very upbeat, even with her breath-like singing.

Track 12: positions

The single. The song that started this whole album. Definitely deserved to be the single. Is it the best song on the album? Absolutely not. Is it good and deserves a good position? Absolutely yes.

Track 13: obvious

A beautiful track. Very light and sweet, but a song to listen to when you’re in love. Her vocals are amazing in this, and it’s very catchy. Definitely a yes!

Others that I’ve had had to impress me before
But I knew you were the real thing
When you walked through the door
I didn’t think that I would have to spell it out

Don’t put the bands, put the bands on me
Oh, my love, oh, my love is free
Ain’t no price on my loyalty
No shit, got me right where you want me, baby
Could I be more obvious? (Ooh)
Hard to think when I’m under you
Tell you all of my dirty truths
No shit, got me right where you want me, baby
Could I be more obvious?

Track 14: pov

The song. This song right here. God it puts a tear in my eye everytime I think about it or talk about it. This is the song that beats all other songs. It is absolutely gorgeous, raw, emotional and perfect in every single way. This is the raw Ariana I had been wanting to see, and she gave it to us. It’s a beautiful song with a beautiful melody, beautiful lyrics… if you’re going to listen to one song from this album, please god let it be this one. It is absolutely wonderful.

It’s like you got superpowers
Turn my minutes into hours
You got more than 20/20, babe
Made of glass, the way you see through me

I wanna love me (Ooh)
The way that you love me (Ooh)
Ooh, for all of my pretty and all of my ugly too
I’d love to see me from your point of view
I wanna trust me (Trust me)
The way that you trust me (Trust me)
Ooh, ’cause nobody ever loved me like you do
I’d love to see me from your point of view

Well that is my track by track break down, but what is my official ranking? This took some time, but I think as of now my ranking is as follows:

  1. pov
  2. west side
  3. nasty
  4. just like magic
  5. six thirty
  6. obvious
  7. 34+35
  8. positions
  9. safety net
  10. love language
  11. shut up
  12. motive
  13. my hair
  14. off the table

Have you guys heard the album yet? What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments! Until next time!

Coming Back…

Hi everyone! Happy Halloween!!

I know, it’s been a little while. I don’t even know how long it has been but it has definitely been awhile.. and well. It was honestly the most well-deserved break I have ever taken.

I had posted back in July that I was coming back (?), but I realized after posting the post that just wasn’t true… I was far from ready. I stopped reading, I stopped doing everything that was bringing me joy from before. I was missing deadlines, work was stressful trying to adjust to home life, and I was in an extremely toxic and violent relationship.

I think I needed the time to realize I was in something I shouldn’t have been in, and doing things I shouldn’t have been doing. I was doubting myself and doubting my abilities to succeed.

Now that I feel confident enough to start blogging, things will be a lot different here on Tea and Turned Pages. First, this blog won’t be just about books. I’m honestly still a little hesitant on reading, so I will be posting about some things I’ve been doing and focusing on during my mental health journey, Disney posts (of course!), and just anything that comes to mind while I get back into the process of reading.

For now I won’t be doing my typical Top Ten Tuesday’s or WWW Wednesday’s, and I will most likely only be posting 2-3 times a week, not the 5 times I was originally doing (which looking back was absolutely insane to do for that time in my life), and hopefully over time we can bump it to 3-4 times, but that will be in the future.

I am happy to be coming back, and happy to hopefully see a big change in my mood and how the blog will help me advance in my life.

Can’t wait to talk to you all soon!

Lots of Love, Ali

Book Review: Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me by Mariko Tamaki

Hello everyone and I hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday so far. Yesterday was Independence Day for us here in the US and I was able to spend some time with family and enjoy the day. Today, I wanted to talk about a book I read back in April, which seems like such a crazy long time ago. I loved this book, until I realized what it was seriously lacking. Let’s get into the review so I can explain a little more.

img_0393 Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me eBook: Tamaki ...Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me

Mariko Tamaki

Pages: 304

Audience: YA

Genre: Graphic Novel, Contemporary Romance, LGBT

Publication Date: May 7, 2019

TRIGGERS: Toxic relationships, abortion

Laura Dean, the most popular girl in high school, was Frederica Riley’s dream girl: charming, confident, and SO cute. There’s just one problem: Laura Dean is maybe not the greatest girlfriend.

Reeling from her latest break up, Freddy’s best friend, Doodle, introduces her to the Seek-Her, a mysterious medium, who leaves Freddy some cryptic parting words: break up with her. But Laura Dean keeps coming back, and as their relationship spirals further out of her control, Freddy has to wonder if it’s really Laura Dean that’s the problem. Maybe it’s Freddy, who is rapidly losing her friends, including Doodle, who needs her now more than ever.

Fortunately for Freddy, there are new friends, and the insight of advice columnists like Anna Vice to help her through being a teenager in love.

  • Freddy’s Group Of Friends – I really loved Freddy’s group of friends. They seemed to be exactly what she needed at that time, and even though she wasn’t always to amazing friend to them back, and even at times rejected their help, they were still there for her, which is what I love to see.
  • Toxic Relationship – It sounds wrong that I “liked” the toxic relationship part, but let me explain. I think in today’s contemporary romantic YA, there isn’t a lot of relationships portrayed like this. But in reality, in high school these type of relationships was all I had seen, all that I knew. I grew up with thinking a relationship should be a certain way, but growing up I realized that is not how it is supposed to be at all. I think the YA community needs to shed more light on how toxic some relationships can be and really shed light on it for awareness, and I just think this book did a great job with showing a toxic relationship and making it known that it absolutely was.
  • Freddy’s Personality- I think Freddy’s personality was perfect. She was a little shy, basically just wanted to try and make everything work and have everyone be happy. Again, goes with the toxic relationship and how people with this personality can be pulled into these kind of relationships.
  • Friendship, Not a New Relationship – I loved how it ended with Freddy gaining new friendships and not just jumping into another relationship. I really appreciated that.

  • Mental Health Portion of A Toxic Relationship – Okay, so the problem I had with this book is that… Freddy never seeks help from really anyone! She’s clearly going through a toxic relationship, and she never seeks therapy help, never talks to anyone really, she keeps it all bottled up inside. I think if that was really how Freddy was, her mental health would just have deteriorated! I think the book could have definitely followed Freddy try and heal and seek help. Teenagers can’t rely on other teenagers all the time, especially when this was a serious situation at times.

I would recommend this book to anyone, I think it’s a great book. Just make sure the trigger warning’s I listed above wouldn’t effect you in any negative way.

Changes That May Be Coming To Walt Disney World

Hey everyone! Today we are going to be talking about some of the changes that may be coming to Walt Disney World this year. It’s been a weird year for Disney, and as Disney plans to re-open in the coming weeks, there will be a lot of changes made to how the parks function. Universal and Seaworld have been open for a little while now, and I feel like it was smart of Disney to watch how their re-opening worked. Let’s get into our discussion of some of the changes that may be coming to Walt Disney World.

Increase In Virtual Lines

Disney introduces virtual queueing at its newest attraction

Disney isn’t a total stranger to virtual lines, and actually… it really worked well for them when Rise of the Resistance opened up. I personally was able to use the app to join a ‘boarding group’ for the ride and it was pretty nice not having to stand in a technically 5 hour line. But will this work for all major rides in Disney World? I can think of a few rides that this could be a really good change for! Slinky Dog, Flight of Passage, Space Mountain and more. I would gladly accept the virtual line change if Disney does decide to go this route.

Wearing A Face Mask Throughout The Park

Disney Introduces Cloth Face Masks and Donations for Families and ...

This will probably be a given when visiting the Parks this summer, if not year. This is the main number one reason why going to Disney during this time is a no for me. I don’t feel comfortable wearing a mask in Walmart for over 30 minutes. It restricts my breathing and is just super uncomfortable, so I barely go to Walmart due to that reason. Imagine being in a park for hours having to wear it? Woof.

Limited Amount of People

I think one of the most obvious things Disney will do is probably cap the amount of people that can come into the parks to a very small amount. This will probably be a route Disney takes since there are a lot of people wanting to come back.

Sanitizing Stations

Disneyland is closing because of coronavirus but Walt Disney World ...

Imagine you’ll be seeing a lot of these around the parks if you visit…

Character Meet and Greets?

You Should Not Miss Meet And Greet Of These Characters When You Go ...

I honestly don’t know how this is going to work, but I doubt Disneyworld will send out cast members with masks on. I just don’t think meet and greets will be a thing.

Sit In Dining?

33 Best (and Worst!) Disney World Restaurants - Disney Trippers

I just don’t know how Disney is going to do the whole dining thing. It would have to be seriously cut down, and buffets? Like is Chef Mickey’s even going to be a thing?? Are reservations going to be extremely hard to come by?

Social Distancing Markers

Social Distancing, Disney Edition (OC) Day 1: The Lion King. Stay ...

I feel like this is a given. Disney 100% is going to have markers everywhere to show where people can stand. Cast members will probably stationed so that this can be truly inforced as well.

Epcot Renovation

Epcot 'Reimagining' Details Announced - Disney Tourist Blog

My biggest fear from this whole thing is that the Epcot renovation is going to be completely messed up. I really was excited to see how this would all look, but unfortunately… I think a lot of cuts are going to be made to Epcot. *inserts extreme sad face*

What are some changes that you think may come to Disney? Any you are interested on how they will be able to keep it in place? Also, do all these changes make you less interested in visiting Disney? Let me know!

What I’ve Been Loving Lately

Hi everyone! So as all of you pretty much know by now, I was on a very much needed 2 month vacation from the blog. I had been really worn out since January after going a full year without a single break, and finally in May I decided that needed to change. I thought it may only be for a few weeks, but that eventually turned into 2 months. A lot happened during this time, and if you missed that post where I pretty much explain everything I’ll link it here.

Just because I have been gone for a little while doesn’t mean I’ve been living under a rock. I’ve been enjoying other things, searching for things that I like, it just happened to be nothing book related. So I decided to share with you today what has really been keeping me grounded and happy during my little break. Let’s get right into it!

My Philosophy Skin Care Routine

I have been in love with my skin care routine lately. Wearing masks constantly when going out can really mess with your skin, especially in these hot summer months. I’ve been using the Philosophy Purity facial cleanser and also the eye cream and moisturizer. Absolutely life changing.

Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated Game

Buy SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated ...

This game is a life saver. I actually used to play this game on PS2 when it came out in like 2003 and ugh! I loved it! It was such a big part of my childhood, and it just was released again for the newer systems. I got this on my Nintendo Switch and I love it! It’s been a really great game for me and my brother to play together, and we get a lot of laughs out of it.

The Seven Deadly Sins (Netflix)

Seven Deadly Sins is the Anime You Didn't Know You Wanted to Watch

Ahhhhh! I discovered this show while I was on my little break, and I am in love!!! I am not a anime watcher what so ever, I mean seriously. I don’t watch anime at all… but this?? This is too good not to watch. It’s an amazing show, and I even am buying the manga slowly book by book to start reading this month. Diane is even currently my iPhone background. I love this show and I can’t wait for season 4 in October.

Apex Legends

Apex Legends - The Next Evolution of Battle Royale - Free on PS4 ...

I am in love with Apex Legends. It’s one of the best battle royale games out there, and I am just obsessed. I play on PS4 with some of my greatest friends I’ve met over the months I’ve been online nonstop. Would highly recommend if you’re looking to move on from Fortnite.

Hell’s Kitchen

Gordon Ramsay reveals his favorite Hell's Kitchen insults |

I’ve been obsessed with this show lately. I love Gordon Ramsey, and this show is a binge watcher for me.

So yeah.. this is pretty much what I’ve been loving while being home, quarantined, and on a little book hiatus lol. Have you guys gained any other hobbies during quarantine? Let me know!
