Album Review: Positions by Ariana Grande (+ rankings)

Well it is here, the new and highly anticipated Positions album released by Ariana Grande.

Now I love me some Ariana, and honestly looking at it more and more, I am definitely a big fan. I do not think there is a song she has that I do not know by heart, which usually shows true fan status.

I was nervous at first for Positions. Honestly, Thank U, Next the album helped me get through some things in my life, and I will forever be grateful for that album. I have seen many of my favorite albums be followed up by some of my least enjoyed albums. For example, Beyoncé’s Lemonade was incredible, but her follow up album The Lion King: The Gift fell flat for me. As did J. Cole’s album 4 Your Eyez Only that came after one of my favorites of all time, 2014 Forest Hills Drive. It has happened before, and I was terrified it would happen with this album.

Thankfully, we did not have that issue this time around.

Positions is a beautiful album filled with heart, soul, and rawness. I certain type of raw emotion we have never seen from her. At times, it is nasty (in a good way of course); at other times, it tugs at your heartstrings, with many fun and strong melodies mixed in.

Today, we are going to go track by track and dive deep into this album, and I’ll even post a full track ranking at the end. Let us get into the review.

Track 1: shut up

Okay, so first track we start off in an interesting way…

She starts off with a song addressing people who just spend way too much time worrying about her and what she’s doing. She even addresses her past issues like the bombing in Europe, Mac Miller’s death, and her former engagement by saying a few simple words:

All them demons helped me see shit differently
So don’t be sad for me

If I had to be honest, this is one of the least powerful intro’s to one of her albums. I would say it’s the weakest. I am not a fan of the chorus, I think the lyrics are a little half assed, but I do love the orchestra in the background.

Track 2: 34+35

This is definitely what I meant by nasty earlier, and I mean NASTY. And I love it. I love that this is the direction her music is going in. She is an adult woman, and I think she has always wanted to make this kind of music, but been hesitant too.

I think the chorus is the best part of this song hands down.

Can you stay up all night?
Fuck me ’til the daylight
Thirty-four, thirty-five (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)

I mean it’s nasty, but it’s lovely and sounds amazing.

Track 3: Motive (Feat. Doja Cat)

Unpopular Opinion, but not a fan of this one like everyone else seems to be! (Spoiler Alert: I really don’t like any of the featured tracks). I think Doja Cat ruins the song. If it was just Ariana for this one, it would be a big difference in my ranking.

Track 4: just like magic

LOVE this track! I think it is so fun, so positive and gives me all of those confident vibes. Two amazing lyrics in this song:

Take my pen and write some love letters to Heaven

And of course…

Just like magic (Baby), just like magic (Oh yeah)
Middle finger to my thumb and then I snap it
Just like magic (Yeah), I’m attractive (Oh yeah)
I get everything I want ’cause I attract it (Oh)

The chorus is perfect and amazing and ugh. Just YES!

Track 5: off the table (Feat. The Weeknd)

Not feeling this one. Definitely not a fan, and I get people wanted another The Weeknd collab but I’m just not… not feeling it.

Track 6: six thirty

Beautiful. Gorgeous. Real and raw again.  It is so catchy, but I really love it. The chorus is a little off, I feel like it could have been stronger, but the lyrics are amazing. Her voice is cute and light, but still packs that strong powerful tone she normally has.

Track 7: safety net (Feat. Ty Dolla $ign)

This song is definitely growing on me, and probably the best song with a feature on it if I have to be totally honest. I do like Ty Dolla $ign, but I think the song falls a little flat.

Track 8: My Hair

I think the worst song on this album is this song. And it’s sad because I get it, people love it. I get the song, its fun and flirty.. but I am not a fan.

Track 9: nasty

Wooooooof! This SONG! Guys, this is as nasty as it gets but things song slaps so hard!! She went so hard on this song, and she knew what she was doing when she released a snippet of this on her Instagram a few weeks back. I love the chorus so much, and that WHISTLE IN THE BEGINNING. It’s a different sound she’s never touched before, and I am LOVING it.

Don’t wanna wait on it
Tonight, I wanna get nasty (Yeah, yeah)
What you waitin’ for? (What you waitin’ for?)
What you waitin’ for?

Track 10: west side

So this album is very weird with the fact that the first half is actually pretty slow, and the second half is full of bops. Starting at nasty and going all the way down it is just bop after bop! West Side is no different. A lot of people on tik tok have been ranking this kind of low, but I really love listening to this song. It gets me in my feelings, makes me feel confident, sexy.. everything a song like this is supposed to sound like. This song is underrated.

I’m gonna make you want more (More)
I’m gonna be your new favorite
Tell ’em you closing the door

I am the only for sure

Track 11: love language

This song has definitely grown on me since it was released. It’s very funky, which is a very new sound for her. It is not her normal sound, and im definitely starting to feel it more and more. Very upbeat, even with her breath-like singing.

Track 12: positions

The single. The song that started this whole album. Definitely deserved to be the single. Is it the best song on the album? Absolutely not. Is it good and deserves a good position? Absolutely yes.

Track 13: obvious

A beautiful track. Very light and sweet, but a song to listen to when you’re in love. Her vocals are amazing in this, and it’s very catchy. Definitely a yes!

[Pre-Chorus]
Others that I’ve had had to impress me before
But I knew you were the real thing
When you walked through the door
I didn’t think that I would have to spell it out

[Chorus]
Don’t put the bands, put the bands on me
Oh, my love, oh, my love is free
Ain’t no price on my loyalty
No shit, got me right where you want me, baby
Could I be more obvious? (Ooh)
Hard to think when I’m under you
Tell you all of my dirty truths
No shit, got me right where you want me, baby
Could I be more obvious?

Track 14: pov

The song. This song right here. God it puts a tear in my eye everytime I think about it or talk about it. This is the song that beats all other songs. It is absolutely gorgeous, raw, emotional and perfect in every single way. This is the raw Ariana I had been wanting to see, and she gave it to us. It’s a beautiful song with a beautiful melody, beautiful lyrics… if you’re going to listen to one song from this album, please god let it be this one. It is absolutely wonderful.

It’s like you got superpowers
Turn my minutes into hours
You got more than 20/20, babe
Made of glass, the way you see through me

[Chorus]
I wanna love me (Ooh)
The way that you love me (Ooh)
Ooh, for all of my pretty and all of my ugly too
I’d love to see me from your point of view
I wanna trust me (Trust me)
The way that you trust me (Trust me)
Ooh, ’cause nobody ever loved me like you do
I’d love to see me from your point of view

Well that is my track by track break down, but what is my official ranking? This took some time, but I think as of now my ranking is as follows:

  1. pov
  2. west side
  3. nasty
  4. just like magic
  5. six thirty
  6. obvious
  7. 34+35
  8. positions
  9. safety net
  10. love language
  11. shut up
  12. motive
  13. my hair
  14. off the table

Have you guys heard the album yet? What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments! Until next time!

Album Review | It Was Good Until It Wasn’t by Kehlani

Hey everyone! Happy Saturday! So yesterday was the day I have been waiting for since like 2018 lol. It was Kehlani’s release day! It Was Good Until It Wasn’t was released yesterday and boy, do I have some thoughts!

I am a major Kehlani fan, so automatically I had very high hopes for this album and honestly? She delivered! So let’s dive into each track and go over my real true and honest thoughts for the album.

Toxic

I will admit, I wasn’t a fan of Toxic at first, but it grew on me. I do disagree she shouldn’t have started off the album with this one, but it’s still a good track and having Ty Dolla $ign on it definitely helped the r&b feel to it.

Can I (Feat. Tory Lanez)

Okay this song really does slap. It’s nasty, but in a good way. I’m really starting to get into Tory Lanez as an r&b artist. He does do his little rap thing, but man is he a good singer. This definitely brings out the fun side to Kehlani, when most of the album is almost kind of dark in a way?

Bad News

Honestly, this is one of the few tracks on this album I don’t care for. It’s okay, and I understand she’s going through a lot of hurt… I just thought it could have been better. Definitely a DEEP TRACK.

Real Hot Girl Skit/Water

Okay so here’s the thing… I personally don’t care for this skit. Yes, it has Megan Thee Stallion in it, and that’s amazing that she’s finally getting some recognition from these artists! I just think the skit was unnecessary, but skit aside, we have another sexy, nasty song from Kehlani. The beat really goes kinda hard and her lyrics are on point. The chorus is super catchy and lowkey, I can totally see the whole ‘water’ thing becoming a tik tok lmao.

Change Your Life (Feat. Jhene Aiko)

Okay… THIS SONG IS CRAZY! I love this song, it’s definitely in my top 3. I love Jhene, love the lyrics, the vibe. THAT CHORUS! It’s a song that makes you feel good and definitely lightens up the album a little. Classic Kehlani.

Belong To The Streets Skit/Everybody’s Business

Everybody’s Business will always be a true slap! This song is so soulful and just lovely to listen to. Not only is the song crazy good, but the music video is iconic. This track definitely is a stand out track and so relatable! It’s basically just about not caring what others say about you, and knowing your own self worth.

Hate The Club (Feat. Masego)

This song is a true vibe… The talent. The catchyness. The FEELS. Definitely an unexpected favorite for me. I am so happy she decided to include this song into the album. Definitely hits home for me. Pure perfection.

Serial Lover

So… at the time of this album releasing, I’m currently going through a pretty big and bitter breakup, and this song is a whole mood if you’re someone who tends to give a lot in a relationship, but it just seems like it never goes anywhere. It hits hard beat wise and the lyrics are just as good.

F&MU

This song may just be my favorite on the album… it’s short, but man is it good. It is so relatable, at times I feel like she wrote the song for me haha. She’s just a relatable artist! She doesn’t flaunt her wealth and displays her imperfections, which is what I enjoy and need. I love her for making this song.

Can You Blame Me (Feat. Lucky Daye)

Ehh.. this song is okay. Definitely not one of my favorites, but it’s pretty good. She just has such an amazing voice in this one and Lucky Daye is amazing in this!!

Grieving (Feat. James Blake)

Okay so, Kehlani came out and said this is her favorite song on the project, without a doubt.. and I definitely see why. I mean these past couple of months she has lost A LOT. I feel for her and this album 100% shows that, but this song? It’s dark, it’s got a little bit of that creepy vibe I like… it is definitely different for her, but I actually kind of like it! Very beautiful sounding and shows just how much hurt she truly has been through.

Open (Passionate)

Ugh this song! I love this track, it’s amazing. The beat switching, the lyrics and the vibe it gives off. Definitely another one of my favorites. This song and Change Your Life definitely give the light this album needs at times.

Lexii’s Outro

Lexii!!! Ugh I had tears for this song. The beautiful Lexii finally got her #1. She was so talented and will be missed forever. Just glad she could be included on this piece while she rests in paradise.

Okay so, my overall thoughts? It’s an amazing album. I love it and I’m sure over time I will grow to appreciate it even more. I am so happy this project came out the way it did and glad it finally did come out!! Well, if you need me I’ll be listening to It Was Good Until It Wasn’t! Peace! lol.

My Thoughts on Last Night’s Grammy Winners

Goodmorning everyone, and yes I know, it’s Harry Potter month and this has nothing to do with that, but it’s the Grammy’s. One of the biggest nights of the year for music. I used to love watching the Grammy’s, but within the last few years, it’s really been difficult for me to watch. I love music, and I love different genres of music, but to me, certain musical acts should not have won over the other nominee’s. I picked a few categories I agreed with and some I did not agree with, so let’s get on with it.

*Disclaimer* I am in no way bashing the artists who won or saying they didn’t deserve their awards, these are just my own thoughts and opinions ( we all have them guys). If I didn’t agree with any of your artists winning their award, it is in no way a personal attack against you.

Album of the Year – Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves

Okay, no. I don’t agree with this at all. I know it was a very good country album, but album of the year? No. This album went up against: Invasion of Privacy – Cardi B, By the Way, I Forgive You – Brandi Carlile, Scorpion – Drake, H.E.R. – H.E.R., Beerbongs and Bentleys – Post Malone, Dirty Computer – Janelle Monae, Black Panther – Various Artists.

I think either Scorpion, H.E.R., or Beerbongs and Bentleys had it. I was shocked to find out she won this category. Like, only three-ish songs were popular from hers. Scorpion beat records for weeks upon weeks. I don’t know, am I the only one who feels this way?

Record of the Year & Song of the Year – This is America by Childish Gambino

I love Childish Gambino, but I was shocked when he actually won not one, but both categories, and I have to say, I actually don’t agree with this. There so many good songs, but for him to win both? I don’t know about that. They did this last year with Bruno Mars too, and I hope this is not going to be just a repeated pattern every year now. Nominees for Record of the Year include: I like it – Cardi B, The Joke – Brandi Carlile, Gods Plan – Drake, Shallow – Bradley Cooper & Lady Gaga, All The Stars – Kendrick Lamar & SZA, Rockstar – Post Malone, The Middle – Zedd. Nominees for Song of the Year include: All the Stars – Kendrick Lamar & SZA, Boo’d Up – Ella Mai, Gods Plan – Drake, In My Blood – Shawn Mendes, The Joke – Brandi Carlile, The Middle – Zedd, Shallow – Bradley Cooper & Lady Gaga.

Best Pop Vocal Album – Sweetener by Ariana Grande

Yes! I’m sorry Taylor Swift fans, but this was a well deserved album to win! Finally she has a Grammy! (took a little longer than expected, but that’s okay, we forgive you know Recording Academy). Nominees in this category were: Reputation – Taylor Swift, Camila – Camila Cabello, Meaning of Life – Kelly Clarkson, Shawn Mendes – Shawn Mendes, and Beautiful Trauma – P!nk. I am so happy for her, and all though things didn’t work out with her performing/being there, I’m just glad she has received one. Definitely happy to see her win this one.

Best Urban Contemporary Album – Everything is Love by The Carters

I kind of agree with this, but not really. I only agree because it is the best album in the category, but there were so many other albums that deserved to be in this category that it makes sense Beyonce and Jay -Z would win. Nominees in this category include: The Kids are Alright – Chloe x Halle, Chris Dave and the DrumHeadz – Chris Dave and the Drumheadz, War & Leisure – Miguel, Ventriloquism – Meshell Ndegeocello

Producer of the Year – Pharrel Williams

I thought about this one more and more, and yeah Pharrell definitely deserved this one. He produced Man of the Woods by Justin Timberlake, Sweetener by Ariana Grande, and No One Every Really Dies by N.E.R.D. I usually love this category just because I find it interesting to know who are the people behind the music we listen to. Who constructs it and puts it together. Other nominees in this category were: Kanye West, Linda Perry, Larry Klein, BOI-1DA.

Best Music Video – This is America by Childish Gambino

I agree, although Apes*** was way more pleasing to the eye and was a beautiful shoot, I’ll take it. Nominees in this category include: Apes*** – The Carters, Im Not Racist – Joyner Lucas, Pynk – Janelle Monae, Mumbo Jumbo – Tierra Whack

So yeah, those were my opinions on this years Grammy’s. Did you guys agree with me on some of these opinions? Let me know in the comments.
