Album Review: Positions by Ariana Grande (+ rankings)

Well it is here, the new and highly anticipated Positions album released by Ariana Grande.

Now I love me some Ariana, and honestly looking at it more and more, I am definitely a big fan. I do not think there is a song she has that I do not know by heart, which usually shows true fan status.

I was nervous at first for Positions. Honestly, Thank U, Next the album helped me get through some things in my life, and I will forever be grateful for that album. I have seen many of my favorite albums be followed up by some of my least enjoyed albums. For example, Beyoncé’s Lemonade was incredible, but her follow up album The Lion King: The Gift fell flat for me. As did J. Cole’s album 4 Your Eyez Only that came after one of my favorites of all time, 2014 Forest Hills Drive. It has happened before, and I was terrified it would happen with this album.

Thankfully, we did not have that issue this time around.

Positions is a beautiful album filled with heart, soul, and rawness. I certain type of raw emotion we have never seen from her. At times, it is nasty (in a good way of course); at other times, it tugs at your heartstrings, with many fun and strong melodies mixed in.

Today, we are going to go track by track and dive deep into this album, and I’ll even post a full track ranking at the end. Let us get into the review.

Track 1: shut up

Okay, so first track we start off in an interesting way…

She starts off with a song addressing people who just spend way too much time worrying about her and what she’s doing. She even addresses her past issues like the bombing in Europe, Mac Miller’s death, and her former engagement by saying a few simple words:

All them demons helped me see shit differently
So don’t be sad for me

If I had to be honest, this is one of the least powerful intro’s to one of her albums. I would say it’s the weakest. I am not a fan of the chorus, I think the lyrics are a little half assed, but I do love the orchestra in the background.

Track 2: 34+35

This is definitely what I meant by nasty earlier, and I mean NASTY. And I love it. I love that this is the direction her music is going in. She is an adult woman, and I think she has always wanted to make this kind of music, but been hesitant too.

I think the chorus is the best part of this song hands down.

Can you stay up all night?
Fuck me ’til the daylight
Thirty-four, thirty-five (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)

I mean it’s nasty, but it’s lovely and sounds amazing.

Track 3: Motive (Feat. Doja Cat)

Unpopular Opinion, but not a fan of this one like everyone else seems to be! (Spoiler Alert: I really don’t like any of the featured tracks). I think Doja Cat ruins the song. If it was just Ariana for this one, it would be a big difference in my ranking.

Track 4: just like magic

LOVE this track! I think it is so fun, so positive and gives me all of those confident vibes. Two amazing lyrics in this song:

Take my pen and write some love letters to Heaven

And of course…

Just like magic (Baby), just like magic (Oh yeah)
Middle finger to my thumb and then I snap it
Just like magic (Yeah), I’m attractive (Oh yeah)
I get everything I want ’cause I attract it (Oh)

The chorus is perfect and amazing and ugh. Just YES!

Track 5: off the table (Feat. The Weeknd)

Not feeling this one. Definitely not a fan, and I get people wanted another The Weeknd collab but I’m just not… not feeling it.

Track 6: six thirty

Beautiful. Gorgeous. Real and raw again.  It is so catchy, but I really love it. The chorus is a little off, I feel like it could have been stronger, but the lyrics are amazing. Her voice is cute and light, but still packs that strong powerful tone she normally has.

Track 7: safety net (Feat. Ty Dolla $ign)

This song is definitely growing on me, and probably the best song with a feature on it if I have to be totally honest. I do like Ty Dolla $ign, but I think the song falls a little flat.

Track 8: My Hair

I think the worst song on this album is this song. And it’s sad because I get it, people love it. I get the song, its fun and flirty.. but I am not a fan.

Track 9: nasty

Wooooooof! This SONG! Guys, this is as nasty as it gets but things song slaps so hard!! She went so hard on this song, and she knew what she was doing when she released a snippet of this on her Instagram a few weeks back. I love the chorus so much, and that WHISTLE IN THE BEGINNING. It’s a different sound she’s never touched before, and I am LOVING it.

Don’t wanna wait on it
Tonight, I wanna get nasty (Yeah, yeah)
What you waitin’ for? (What you waitin’ for?)
What you waitin’ for?

Track 10: west side

So this album is very weird with the fact that the first half is actually pretty slow, and the second half is full of bops. Starting at nasty and going all the way down it is just bop after bop! West Side is no different. A lot of people on tik tok have been ranking this kind of low, but I really love listening to this song. It gets me in my feelings, makes me feel confident, sexy.. everything a song like this is supposed to sound like. This song is underrated.

I’m gonna make you want more (More)
I’m gonna be your new favorite
Tell ’em you closing the door

I am the only for sure

Track 11: love language

This song has definitely grown on me since it was released. It’s very funky, which is a very new sound for her. It is not her normal sound, and im definitely starting to feel it more and more. Very upbeat, even with her breath-like singing.

Track 12: positions

The single. The song that started this whole album. Definitely deserved to be the single. Is it the best song on the album? Absolutely not. Is it good and deserves a good position? Absolutely yes.

Track 13: obvious

A beautiful track. Very light and sweet, but a song to listen to when you’re in love. Her vocals are amazing in this, and it’s very catchy. Definitely a yes!

Others that I’ve had had to impress me before
But I knew you were the real thing
When you walked through the door
I didn’t think that I would have to spell it out

Don’t put the bands, put the bands on me
Oh, my love, oh, my love is free
Ain’t no price on my loyalty
No shit, got me right where you want me, baby
Could I be more obvious? (Ooh)
Hard to think when I’m under you
Tell you all of my dirty truths
No shit, got me right where you want me, baby
Could I be more obvious?

Track 14: pov

The song. This song right here. God it puts a tear in my eye everytime I think about it or talk about it. This is the song that beats all other songs. It is absolutely gorgeous, raw, emotional and perfect in every single way. This is the raw Ariana I had been wanting to see, and she gave it to us. It’s a beautiful song with a beautiful melody, beautiful lyrics… if you’re going to listen to one song from this album, please god let it be this one. It is absolutely wonderful.

It’s like you got superpowers
Turn my minutes into hours
You got more than 20/20, babe
Made of glass, the way you see through me

I wanna love me (Ooh)
The way that you love me (Ooh)
Ooh, for all of my pretty and all of my ugly too
I’d love to see me from your point of view
I wanna trust me (Trust me)
The way that you trust me (Trust me)
Ooh, ’cause nobody ever loved me like you do
I’d love to see me from your point of view

Well that is my track by track break down, but what is my official ranking? This took some time, but I think as of now my ranking is as follows:

  1. pov
  2. west side
  3. nasty
  4. just like magic
  5. six thirty
  6. obvious
  7. 34+35
  8. positions
  9. safety net
  10. love language
  11. shut up
  12. motive
  13. my hair
  14. off the table

Have you guys heard the album yet? What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments! Until next time!

Book Review | More Myself: A Journey by Alicia Keys

Hi everyone! Happy Mothers Day! I hope everyone is able to celebrate Mother’s Day today at least in some type of form even through all of the craziness. I bought my mom some goodies from Ulta a few weeks ago online, so at least I was able to get her something. She loves basically all Kylie Cosmetics products, so I was able to get her lip glosses, eyeshadow palettes, and a super cute blush!

Today, I wanted to share a book review with you guys, but I picked this specific book for this day because I thought it fit best with the whole Mother’s Day theme. I actually read Alicia Keys new book! I will admit, I mainly picked this one up for the star filled audiobook cast, which included Jay-Z, Oprah, Swizz Beats, and even more. But, after reading it, it really just showed me how much of a positive spirit Alicia is. Let’s get into the review!

More Myself: A JourneyMore Myself: A Journey

Alicia Keys with Michelle Burford

Pages: 272

Audience: Adult

Format: Audiobook

Genre(s): Nonfiction, Memoir, Feminism, Leadership

Publication Date: March 31, 2020

As one of the most celebrated musicians of our time, Alicia Keys has enraptured the nation with her heartfelt lyrics, extraordinary vocal range, and soul-stirring piano compositions. Yet away from the spotlight, Alicia has grappled with private heartache―over the challenging and complex relationship with her father, the people-pleasing nature that characterized her early career, the loss of privacy surrounding her romantic relationships, and the oppressive expectations of female perfection.

Since her rise to fame, Alicia’s public persona has belied a deep personal truth: she has spent years not fully recognizing or honoring her own worth. After withholding parts of herself for so long, she is at last exploring the questions that live at the heart of her story: Who am I, really? And once I discover that truth, how can I become brave enough to embrace it?

More Myself is part autobiography, part narrative documentary. Alicia’s journey is revealed not only through her own candid recounting, but also through vivid recollections from those who have walked alongside her. The result is a 360-degree perspective on Alicia’s path―from her girlhood in Hell’s Kitchen and Harlem, to the process of self-discovery she’s still navigating.

In More Myself, Alicia shares her quest for truth―about herself, her past, and her shift from sacrificing her spirit to celebrating her worth. With the raw honesty that epitomizes Alicia’s artistry, More Myself is at once a riveting account and a clarion call to readers: to define themselves in a world that rarely encourages a true and unique identity.

  • Star-Studded Audiobook – What an amazing cast of people to not only be able to be included in the book, but the audiobook as well! To hear Oprah, Jay-Z, Swizz Beats, I mean just Alicia alone was amazing! It definitely kept me interested since non-fiction is not always one of my strong suits.
  • Alicia is such an incredible powerhouse – I never realized how incredible Alicia really is, and just how much she gives back into the world. Going through her journey and being able to read about her positive and mindful spirit definitely was something I enjoyed.
  • Mind, body, and spirit advice – Yes, this is a nonfiction book. But I feel like even though you’re reading about Alicia’s story, you’re still taking away some information from the book and can apply it to your life. There’s a lot of meditation advice in here and just positive thinking that everyone, not only women, should apply to their everyday life.
  • Uplifting during a difficult time – I read this during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I think I definitely needed to read this. At a time like this, it’s nice to read about a positive story, one that isn’t so negative and so many up and downs, it’s a pretty solid positive read and I enjoyed that as I’m sure you can tell.
  • Music within the audiobook – I loved the fact that Alicia would play music and sing in between chapters, also when talking about a specific song in depth she would sing it. Ugh, what an amazing voice she has.
  • Not too long, Perfect length – This book was 272 pages long and I thought that was the PERFECT length. I don’t really care for nonfiction that’s 400+ pages, I like smaller books, I’m not going to lie here. It went by nicely, and I think if it was any longer I might not have gotten through it, maybe not even picked it up.

  • Wanted more music details/backstories – I would have liked more details and backstories about the SONGS. The albums were described very well, don’t get me wrong. But I would have loved to have seen the songs and their stories go more into depth because Alicia does write her own music, and has some pretty powerful songs on some pretty power filled albums.
  • Wanted more depth going into 9/11 – She seemed to have a pretty big part of the healing New York needed after 9/11. I’ve heard stories, but New York is my home and I’ve known for a long time that Alicia was big into helping New York heal. I would have loved to hear her reactions to it and about her performance. She’s a New Yorker, and me being one myself I wanted to hear more about that.
  • Too Political for my tastes – I didn’t care for the tone the book was taking towards the end with the political talking. I understand, shit I would love to talk about Obama too. But about the whole Trump and Hillary thing… I don’t know. It just got too political for my personal tastes. That’s all.

If you’re an Alicia Keys fan, absolutely. You should read this immediately, and definitely the audiobook. If you know about her but aren’t necessarily a fan and don’t have any issues with her, I would also recommend this to you. If you don’t like Alicia Keys, and I don’t really know why you wouldn’t, then probably don’t pick this up, but definitely look at the decisions you’re making in life because Alicia is not a bad person or someone you should hate what-so-ever 🤣.

AGH! I love the Lemonade album, and now that it’s finally streaming on Apple Music, I was super hyped to listen to it all over again. But, Bey gave us a little something extra to celebrate the album’s 3 year anniversary, and this is what she gave us. I’m in love. I love this version wayyyyyy more than the original. The beat is so simple, it blows my mind lol. Just, check it out. I love it so much.

Okay guys, time for you to let me know what you guys have been up to in the comments! How has your month of April been?

March 2019 Wrap-Up

Hello all my book friends! I know it’s a little early for a March wrap up, but I am sooo done with March at this point. I had a terrible reading month, but finally I can feel a decent reading mood coming on to the nice weather, so I decided to just go ahead and call it a loss this month. I am ready to get back to reading in April, so that’s a good sign for this upcoming month.

*Reviews are linked for each book*

Puddin – Julie Murphy ⭐/5

Nothing really knew music wise this month, but I did go to the Ariana Grande Sweetener Tour! She opened up in my home city and it was an absolutely amazing concert. So, after that concert, I have been listening to mainly Ariana Grande nonstop.

Other than Ariana Grande, here are some songs I have been listening to that aren’t necessarily new, but I have been listening to on repeat.

Demons – Imagine Dragons (Night Visions)

Natural – Imagine Dragons (Origins)

Butterfly – Kehlani (While We Wait)

Talk – Khalid (Talk-Single)

And A LOT.. of Ariana Grande lol.

Again, not a lot of movies this month actually. I only went to the movies a few times, this month I want to catch up on some YA movies I haven’t watched yet like Five Feet Apart, The Hate U Give… movies like that.

I went to go see Isn’t It Romantic with my brother’s girlfriend this month, and although I don’t care for romantic comedies, it was pretty funny. Rebel Wilson is growing on me as an actress and I thought she was great in this. And of course, Liam Hemsworth was in it. So I had to see it lol.
